Barcelona v Man Utd

Should be one to remember. I expect Manchester to foul like fuck, but I think Barca will do them. I shall be watching it in the comfort of a bar in Pefkos, Rhodes *counts sleeps*. It should be great match, well, anything will be better than that Arsenal Barca final from a few years ago.

Will anybody else be watching this? No, thought not.

I play 5-a-side on a Wednesday - so unless it goes to ET in which case I'll watch it in the boozer - It's a no from me.
Sir Bulldog Craggwood

course I'll be watching ya daft beggar! I think this one will be insanely competitive and I predict a lot of dirty play from both sides but plenty of cut and thrust    2-2 Man U win 3-2 AET

Mr Ash - I think your post magnificently demonstrates the advances made in the North-East towards the total integration of sport and leisure activities - a five-a-side pitch in a pub.

I'm picturing portly men wearing variously coloured bar-coded nylon shirts running (I say running - ambling is probably a better description) around in slippers on a sticky carpet while carrying a bottle of broon...

It's, errrr, something for the weekend, isn't it?
Late Doors

Having consulted the social calendar and activity list for the forthcoming Summer I see that regretfully on the day of the aforementioned Association Football spectacle I find myself committed to a day of tidying the sock drawer and putting the CDs back into alphabetical order. I may afford myself a little Tapas and a glass of Rioja if God willing, a favourable result unfolds.

It's on a Saturday evening.

I shall kill myself to death if they win. One silly bastard scum supporter [mate of mine] asked if I was coming up to watch the game in the club. Negative response.
lolwarlol

Yes i'd much rather watch Leeds or Fulham than these two incompetent teams. Cruel jokes aside it should be a great match.

Exactly, if you are any kind of a fan of football this should be watched, if only to watch Barca. I don't think Barca will get as fiesty as they did against Madrid in the Copa del Rey. I think they were giving RM some of their own medicine in that match. And quite right as well.
Grind

Much like the Royal Wedding, I'll watch it (probably after recording it) but I'm not sure I'll be entirely happy with what I'm seeing.
grunt

I will be watching but only to sneer and curse.
smiling badger

I'll be watching and cheering on Barca.

Apparently Alex Ferguson receives two turds in the post every week, what i want to know is who is sending the other one?

VIVA BARCA !!!!
Tank Girl

dont know who to support.
like the diplomat he is, pl says he hopes the game of football wins.
lolwarlol

Well, i would like to see Man Utd win, but i hope it is a great game.
smiling badger

Have a horrid feeling that the Mancs may snatch it and win this game.
Tank Girl

well i am supporting man u on balance. i like Barcelona and who cannot admire messi, and some of their magical players but man u an english team and therefore i support them in a european final.

for me, domestic rivalries do not apply in these games, if celtic was in a european final i would proper support them. damn right i would.
fartcatcher

I have a grudging respect for prune face and admire some of his players (Vidic, Park, Carrick, Valencia). However, not sufficiently for me to want them to win.

I'll be cheering on Torquay in the big one though.
grunt

I wouldn't support a team just cos they're English. There has to be a better reason than that. To me supporting Manure tonight would be like supporting BP or McDonalds. I am a citizen of the globe and therefore do not let trifling matters like proximity influence who I support.
Tank Girl

but do you feel the same way about barcelona grunt?
grunt

Yes I think I do though I've not thought the metaphor through properly yet. The only reason I would favour them slightly is that watching Messi play is such a treat, and there would be marginally less to put up with media wise if they won. If the mancs found a way to beat them though, fair and square, I'd grudgingly be forced to take a stance of impressedness.
Late Doors

Its funny isnít it, Liverpool in the late seventies and eighties were similar, playing in Euro Finals and winning them. Like Villa and Forest any final involving them was essential viewing and very partisan towards the English Team. Maybe its rose tinted nostalgia but I remember Liverpool, the whole club and fans having more class in their toilet offerings than this bunch of shallow whining cheating and arrogant blaghards have mustered in the whole of the last twenty five years. Yes they are a fab football team with possibly the most capable manager the English league has ever seen but hearing about them being beaten tonight (as I cannot risk putting myself through such torture of watching them possibly win) will be stage one of a glorious bank holiday weekend. Stage 2 being tomorrow when Peterborough clinch the play off spot.

Apologies for the pedantry, but I think the appropriate cry should be "Visca catalunya", a phrase I came across in my back-packing youth painted onto the cliffs overlooking Port Bou, a Catalonian Mediterranean coastal town just over the border from France.

Circa 1981, myself and two chums had arrived on an overnight train heading for somewhere (I forget where) in Spain and had to get off while they changed the train wheels to meet Spanish-rail gauge. We took the opportunity to venture into the town and ended spending several happy days there sleeping on the beach.

We also had a near-death experience. We were awoken from our afternoon siesta on the beach by three blonde topless 'stunnas' speaking to us in what we thought was "angel-speak". Logically, we had assumed we had died and gone to heaven. In reality, it was three Swedish lasses who had been attracted by the posh department store carrier bags we had picked up in Stockholm a few days previously.

Very happy days indeed. We returned a couple of years later and weren't disappointed, though I can't vouch for the place now.

I hadn't previously been aware of Spain's regional political and cultural differences, but while there, one of the lads we met was studying Spanish at university who was well up on the details. It was he who advised of us of the significance of the "Visca catalunya" graffiti.

So in "Stars in their eyes" stylee... "Tonight. Matthew, I'm going to be a Barcelona supporter."
Forest

Im supporting Barca cos I think alex Ferguson is a cunt. That is all.

God you're so racist. What's wrong with the Spanish?

I'm way above petty nationalism and shall support Barca because they belong to the fans and all Spaniards are lovely, friendly, beautiful, gentle, intelligent, humorous, creative, trustworthy, caring, generous people.

yes you've got a point mick.

i had decided until you said that.

They're not Spanish, they're Catalans and they're very accommodating of coeliacs.

its not racist, its nationalist.... or localist.

why do you support leeds and not Portsmouth, or dynamo kiev.

i dont know why you all hate ferguson, you're all completely barking.

we hate him because of the arrogance, the constant whingeing and the belief that he and his club are bigger than football.

got a good tonking tonight though

let's see who he blames for this one
Tank Girl

you see him that way cus you is mentalists

he is quite old though isn't he, must be 70. that's when people start look old these days, dont you think? between 45 and 65 loads of people could be any age to look at.
when i was a kid people, it seemed to me, especially women,  looked old at 50.
proper old.

thought fergie gave pep a really admiring handshake at the end of that match. he said some nice things about barcelona after as well.
no moaning

ManUre weren't even on the pitch last night, at least according to Mascherano...

I love that clip
grunt

So Giggs finally found a way to become totally anonymous.
fartcatcher

I thought Barcelona were ossum. Second half was like a training kickabout. Man U had absolutely no idea where the ball was going next.

Setting aside my irrational prejudices, the football was superb and the game was played in a great spirit.

It's great for the game when a showpiece match lives up to expectations.

It's a shame that the World Cup rarely matches the quality of the Euro Championship.
lebowski

Didn't watch it, was in the Robin Hood in Ponte and they had it on, super big cheers every time barca scored, Geordie landlady was mightily puzzled that the vast majority wanted Barca to win.

Happy days.
Late Doors

Indeed, and what a fine weekend it turned out to be . I caught the last five mins and then the highlights, what a show from our boys  . Had to laugh at Giggs little mini rant appealing for handball in pathetic desperation.
Mick McCann

On the Barca/Spain thing I love the fact that they make a mockery of the big powerful, players ethos of the modern game.

It goes all the way down our footie system, meaning that Sept, Oct, Nov born kids dominate school teams and on to the pro game just down to the fact that their 6months to a year more physically advanced than other kids not more skillful.

Barca even had a 5 foot 7" centre half.

Very true, but scumchester did not have a centre-forward any taller, so it wasn't going to be a typically English air-raid attacking tactic either.  I do agree though Mick, man u looked heavy, tired, limited and 'cloggish' - you can have that one for free - even tho Rooney did score a great goal.

Also, I've never seen Messi mis control the ball so often, yet he still embarrassed the opposition throughout with his pace, skill and creativity.

And a 6 foot keeper...
