Balooshai. Huddersfield Town center.

Originally established in Honley before moving under the Railway arches in town a good few years ago now this is the place we all keep going back to. Quite small but always excellent often perfect for lone dining, couples, mixed groups and takeaways it never fails with its friendly efficient service, frenetic open kitchen and truly wonderful Asian food, or at least the British take on that. I have seen Asian groups in as well though. To me it is the epitome of a  post beer quality curry house. I'm no expert and in fact quite the wimp when it comes to chillis but i could go to Balooshai at least once a week every week.

Arriving on Saturday after our day in Bradford we were well ready. Veg Pakora, crisp then soft floury spice speckled bites of sweet soft onion and other veg pieces. Cheese fritters, a decadent treat. A softer batter with airy fluffy cheese balls filled with savoury bite. Hari Lal lamb, a house special. Tender lamb amongst a veritable waterfall of subtle acidic strands of peppers, chillis and onions on a backdrop of fiercely spiced tangy tomato based full bodied sauce that tangos on your tongue. It makes my eyes and nose run but by crikey it is good. Not too salty either which makes it perfect for me

The Green Chicken is the antithesis of that. Subtle quite creamy clovey, coriander cardamom laced  perfumed and salty with a hint of chilli wrapped around juicy chunks of chicken breast and pureed spinach. Plain rice rather than a greasier pillau and a fresh plain naan . Balooshai Naans are not the thin flakey type some prefer, they are soft doughy fresh, tasty and substantial. A bottle of Cobra washes it all down. An enormous fulfilling epicurean weekend curry extravaganza. When it's just what you want there is nothing finer and it was.

They do other great stuff as well. Sizzling lively fresh kebabs, subtle fish, crisp samosas, fierce and complex specials and all top drawer, top quality brilliantly cooked and well served. Everybody has their favourite and there is the added bonus of the Sportsman jut up the road.

Spooky. I have just suggested a closed season meet up along the same lines in LD'S Bradford thread.

Can I just add, if the restaurant was on top of a hill and advertised itself with a big fire at the front of the restaurant, would that be classed as.................................. a Balooshai Beacon? Geddit?

Comedy. Its the elixir of life.

Or more likely a spherical orange light at a zebra crossing outside the restaurant.

Aren't all oranges spherical?

We've made a right dogs breakfast of LD's thread. If he asks who did it say it was you Sheeps.
Frazier Cranium

Er point of order, some oranges are not spherical, take for instance the chocolate orange which has whole segments missing if it comes anywhere near me.

Segments or pieces? It's a question that has baffled great minds for millennia.

And the only fruit on here is Dock.

Devastating news to report. The Balooshai in town has shut down  . New Pack 'em in, fill 'em up inferior places have taken a lot of custom away together with some rent disagreements have made the family concentrate on and consolidate the Honley branch about three mile out of town. Used to be the coach and horses pub  tragically run down but at least it is now something as enjoyable.

The good news is that the place is smarter than the town place and the food is at least as sensational if not better. Fucked our impromptu feasts up though and planning is now required as well as travel logistics to negotiate and arrange. Ultimately worth it 'cos it is proper nom nom tucker and still the best a few of us have ever been to.

We could do an earlier visit to Honley than that timetable suggests then back to Huddersfield for some pop.

They open at five on a Saturday.
