Heyho

Adam Johnson

Firstly I must say I lost any sympathy I might have had for the tosser once I heard at some stage he knew how old she was but continued. That is clearly crossing the line and they must throw the book at him.

What worries me is that the whole essence of English law is based around 'innocent until proven guilty'. Yet all we have seen here is trial by media (especially social media) plus some supposed mates of the girl putting pictures of her all over the internet. Surely the identities of both the accused and the alledged victim should be kept from the public until the verdict comes in.

It should be illegal to publish the identities of anyone before a verdict is given or publish details of anyone directly involved in the trial until a verdict is given. I know the press would love that  but the press have a lot to answer for publishing details of the(minority) of innocent accused.
Grind

I'm not sure if this is the case in Blighty (I certainly don't recall it ever being that way), but the thing that boggles my mind here is the fact that jurors often are identified to the general public.

This seems to be the height of stupidity to me - I certainly wouldn't want to be a juror in, say, a terrorism case if I knew I could easily be identified. Bonkers.

It's bad enough that there is excessive amounts of jury selection (i.e. rigging) in the first place - so much for being judged by a representative sample of your peers.

This country is strange.

Adam Johnson is probably just the tip of the footie-stars-shagging-anything-that-moves problem....

I agree with your point about anonymity but that's in-a-perfect-world-stuff innit. Regarding the girl, in this case and many others similar to it it's impossible to keep it under wraps. The girl may have been absent from school for a prolonged period which may have got people gossiping and one certainty in this life is that teenagers talk to each other A LOT! How the fuck an adult male thinks that texting, contacting an underage girl online, or simply putting himself in a position to meet with her secretly will be kept quiet is beyond me. Apart from thinking what an immoral dirty swine he is, I also think what a thick bastard!
Heyho

Like I say totally inexcusable once he knew her age but...

Disproportionate amount of media coverage given to this if compared to the comparative footnotes of coverage given to Pakistani rape gangs in Rochdale, Oxford, Rotherham, Keighley

Dozens and dozens of underage girls who have been groomed, abused, coerced, raped and prostituted now and for decades up and down the country whilst the media, police, CPS, councils and social workers looked the other way

But lets all focus on the white male millionaire or Rolf Harris or Stuart Hall so we can feel better about ourselves

Not me. Only want to hear about it when the jury passes judgement.

And regards the Rape Gangs - if the quality of journalism in this country was better (and I harp back to the phrase sensationalist journalism) then I would feel much happier that such things were being reported fairly and not to sell newspapers

Not me either Dawg. Total opposite. I love it that certain 'minorities' are now finally being held to account after being allowed to live in a cosy PC bubble for so long. Time for change!

Ched Evans back in court soon appealing against his guilty verdict.

Another fine role model from the world of football.
Late Doors

I've the deliberately avoiding the story (the johnson one) but ironically have been actively trying to find news of all those other abuse stories. It's like trying to find nuclear secrets. The news media can clam up when they want or be told to eh?
