A Rage in Harlem - Chester Himes

Iím not a big lover of crime fiction but when itís done well and it bounces along like ARIH itís hard not to like it. First published in 1957 this is the tale or rather caper (I know all the lingo me) of two hapless brothers Goldy and Jackson who get caught †up in a whirlwind of a scam with some unsavoury characters. To calm the whirlwind enter the excellently named NYPD detectives Coffin Ed Johnson & Grave Digger Jones who are as unorthodox as the menagerie of hookers, low-lifeís, and hustlers that pepper the novel and the bedlam of 125th Street and its surrounding area. This wasnít written by some tweedy twerp who had to imagine it. Himes had done a stint in Chokey for armed robbery himself which adds to the reality often lacking in this genre.

It has the wit, violence, twists, and dialogue that you would find in a Tarantino film but itís just all squeezed into two hundred pages that ooze with the sights, sounds, and smells of Gotham. He did a series of novels featuring Detectiveís Johnson and Jones and I am going to read all of them. Hipper than the click of a pimps zippo lighters lid. 10/10

I'm always a little wary of books that ooze.
Late Doors

Bouncing's good though
Grind

If it's the right sort of bouncing, ooze won't be far behind.

Oh fuck of and do your own reviews then. Cheeky monkeys!

New review for LD and Grinder:

This book is set in Harlem. It's got some policemen in it and it also has some other characters in it. Some things happen to the characters.

Is that better, Twats!

*takes umbrage, tuts and flounces*

Grind

So there isn't any bouncing?

* Stops oozing.

No. None. Just some characters that do things and that things happen to. Its not worth reading really. In the final analysis it's baba.
