A Monster Calls

Can't have Heyho being all Barry Norman on his own

A Monster Calls for all its hype & publicity when it came out seemed to be a quite original but soppy kids film nonetheless.  It isn't at all, I absolutely bloody loved this film - the cast, the art, the animation and the story... well I knew the story was basically about a troubled child losing his parent(s) who is visited by a huge talking yew tree.

It is a very emotive film, just like when Bambi you know, realizes some bugger has shot someone close to him, but it isn't mawkish at all, it just focuses fantastically well on a lad trying to sort his life out while it's collapsing all around him.

The kid, Lewis Macdougall, is superb in this.  I understand that his own life has been troubled too so there's a chance he isn't always acting.  Sigourney Weaver, Liam Neeson, Toby Kebbell...  it's a beautiful flick.

9 out of 10 twigs from me.
Late Doors

Doesnt sound like my cup of tea but thinks for posting it. Also ten out of ten for use of the  word Mawkish. A criminally underused word if ever there was one and one i will be trying to shoehorn into as many conversations as possible in future

Hey I have also watched Midnight Express again (just that it was about 35 years since I last watched it)

And I subjected Mrs H to The Wall much to her disgust

Thanks

The best 'kids' films' are those the adults enjoy more than the kids and I think this could well be one of them.

Both good films though I'll be honest, I think The Wall album is overrated (compared to other Floyd albums).  The best track Waters wrote is When The Tigers Broke Free imo and I'm not even sure it's part of the film soundtrack.

Bob Geldof is ace in the flick too.

Midnight Express, ace film but v unpleasant I think.
