2010 Juddmonte International (MCR)

It’s that time of year again, the biggest money race in the York calendar. Last year I had my flabber totally gasted being there to witness Sea the Stars win with the ease and pace that was his trademark, and this year’s race should be a belter as well. Really looking forward to watching Dick Turpin, the Richard Hannon trained flyer who’s career I’ve been following since last season (Hannon is a sprint trainer, and DT is a miler so to enter him in this distance 1mile 2 furlongs, and to pay the £50,000 entry supplement, must mean he’s pretty bloody confident). Frankie D also sounds very confident about his mount ‘Cavalryman’. At nine runners, it’s the size of field that a race like the Juddmonte deserves, as opposed to last years four runners (the reason for the lack of horses entered in last years race was because a lot of trainers couldn’t see how they’d have a chance against STS, and they were right). Also Papa Docks (Wakey not Haiti) first trip to the races this year since his bypass op, so he’s chomping at the bit for want of a better pun.

Thats an opptimistic punt T'B, he's not even running is he? O'Brien is fielding Rip Van Winkle instead. Or he was last I heard. Have you got some inside knowledge from the Ballydoyle stable?

Snazzy. The Racing Post doing specialised sites for big meetings. Ace! I'm right excited. I won't sleep tonight, I really won't.

Good choice T'B. Re: the old card. That is a common problem with Aidan O' Brien, because he only declares who he's running right at the eleventh hour. He decided to run Cape Blanco and Fame an Glory in the Irish Champion Stakes instead, think it's in a couple of weeks.

Your trying to bait me aren't you? I won't be baited, I really won't.

I had a brill day as did Papa Dock (even though he didn't have a winner). Perfect weather, and perfect going for the horses. Bearing was close with his choice but Johnny Murtagh nicked it by a nose on Rip Van Winkle. I did ok with a winner (Puddle Duck), and two each ways so ended the day up by about £80. It's been a fantastic four days of racing at the Ebor meeting, and not without upsets, notably the favorite for the Yorkshire Oaks (Sariska) left standing in the stalls like a Blackpool donkey, with a very bemused looking Jamie Spencer sat on her back. And yesterday in the Nunthorper Stakes, a 100-1 winner in a Group 1 race  (Sole Power) owned by David and Sabena Power of the Paddypower dynasty. talk about money going to money.

Sandown and Chester today. Ace!

I had it each way in my brain bookies.

Chester goes the other way round doesn't it Dock?

Not sure what you mean B? If you mean Chester has one of the shortest radius of a course in Britain, you'd be right. It's tiny.

Another big race tonight. The Arlington Million in T'Chicago. English and Irish raiders in the race include Kieren Fallon, William Buick, and Richard Hills. It's on at 11.14, so I won't get to see it cos I'll be sleepy-pops at that time of night. You don't keep looks like mine by staying up late yer know.

Some great racing for the first day of this years festival tomorrow. I can't wait me. The Juddmonte is at 3.40 but I'm looking forward to the 3.05 Voltigeur Stakes. I think its a far more competitive field than the JI this year. Namibian is looking very good to me, and at the moment Silvestre de Sousa is heading for a champion jockey title with the way his season has started. Some great fields in all the races, and after that bit of rain we had this morning I would reckon the going should be perfect (as long as it doesn't chuck it down tonight n' that). Meeting Papa Dock in T'Maltings at the foot of Lendal Bridge at 11.45 for a pre-race glass of pop and a form study.
