'A Season With Verona'

by Tim Parks ('Recreation', to his friends).

This is a factual account of the Italian-English journalist and newish fan of Verona's main footie team, Verona (aka Hellas too, I think).

Yes you probably would need to appreciate the game if you are to enjoy this book to its max but hell, it is a great read anyway.  I've read it as part of some ongoing research but this had been recommended a few times over the years.  It follows mainly the club over one dramatic season but there is plenty of Italian politics, corruption, violence and the author's personal life netwined too.  It rarely is boring, even when not much is happening it's still written in a very appealing way.

And I now know what Fuck Off in Italian is
leb

Hellas ? All sounds Greek to me.

Yep, I know, that's why I wasn't totally sure I had it right

He used to write a weekly column in the Guardian about his experiences. Really enjoyed reading them. Particularly the rivalry with Chievo, Verona's other team, and his assocation with some of the dodgier factions amongst the Verona fans.

Didn't realise until then that there was a N-S divide in Italy. Only it works the other way round to ours.

Now on the shopping list.
