Raise a toast to St Joe Strummer
I think he might have been our only decent teacher

In the bar-light she looked alright
In the day-light she looked desperate

They're quite old and most of them have been in plenty of bands before. The singer and guitarist were in Lifter Puller before forming the Hold Steady after being inspired by seeing the Last Waltz and the E Street Band.

They were taken up in early 2007 by Uncut Mgazine who made "Boys and Girls in America" the album of the year. They are exceptional live but on record Craig Finn (the singer and writer) talks about all kinds of stuff you wouldn't expect to hear in rock music.

THe Irish Centre gig they did in July was one of the best I've seen.

Tuesday 19th May, Cockpit.

If any Leeds Reggers fancy seeing the most incendiary live band of 30-somethings on the planet let me know. Getting tickets this week, will sell out shortly.

This is now out and pretty much captures them in a suitably raw state - late 2006, so nothing like the polished machine they are now over 2 years later.

By the way LD and Leb, we're invited to Mojo after the 19th May gig for an audience with the Hold Steady, probably involving about 100 other people so maybe we should give it a miss, it being a school night and all that.

The Cockpit show is the night after their last gig in support of Counting Crows.
