Haven't got a single record by them, even lost a few of their vintage 7inch singles my Dad entrusted me with a few years ago.

Sgt Pepper is an embarrassment - 'Lovely Rita, meter maid'??

They may have invented popular music but I don't like them.

We agree Butts - overrated, twee and Paul McCartney is a joke these days, makes me laugh how he falls for all of the sycophantic interviews hook line and sinker.

Come on. You've got your opinions and I'm sure they are as valid as mine   , but they've done at least 20 songs that are just flat out classics.

Twee is a good word for some of their output. There was a lot of that in the sixties though.

I think the uncritical hyperbole surrounding them rubs people up the wrong way.
They didn't invent popular music, they were just in the right place and time to take advantage
of the pop music boom and help it along a bit.

They did some great stuff but i'd still rather listen to the stones or kinks

what they did was change the way the music biz was organised.

Nobody before had written, performed and arranged their own songs. Tin Pan Alley hated them because they wrested control away from the promotors, impressarios and A & R men and gave it to the artists, paving the way for the Stones, Kinks, Animals, Yardbirds etc.

Sadly we seem to have regressed now.

Agree it was all downhill after Revolver though.

Just found this thread, and I'm astounded at how people are dismissing them. I think Rubber Soul and Revolver are two of the best albums of pop music of all time, and each song on both albums are of a standard of quality that most bands never even get near to. In eight years they produced a shed load of classic albums and singles that still sound brand new forty years later. Strawberry Fields Forever is beyond description for me, it's THAT good. And Revolver is faultless. As some one who likes many different types of music, Revolver easily gets my vote for favorite album of all time. And the fact that the songs are so acomplished, hooky, and groundbreaking beggars belief cos' the lads that wrote them were ferals who were only in their early 20's. Great band, and shame on all you naysayers.

Exactly, a double album of classics including Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter, Blackbird, and Mother Natures Son. How can anybody not acknowledge the consistency of this band. WTF?

A few other reasons for them being a farcking excellent band:

Penny Lane
A Hard Days Night (album and film)
Ticket to Ride
We Can Work it Out
Across the Universe
Let it Be
Polythene Pam
Get Back

I'll stop there, er, no I won't:

Every Little Thing
I am the Walrus
Something
I've Got a Feeling
Dear Prudence
Martha My Dear
Eight Days a Week
Roof Top Gig
Twist and Shout
Love me Do
Money (cover of the Berry Gordy song)
Give Peace a Chance
Maybe I'm Amazed
Rain
My Sweet Lord
All Things Must Pass
All You Need is Love
Blue Jay Way

That'll do for now.

They were great, i reckon like Elvis, Dylan, the Stones and possibly U2 they have such a massive amount of work released it's nigh impossible not to like one of their tracks.

I can appreciate and admire them, but I don't love them. They don't move me in a way which other music does. I've yet to be persuaded that they write from the heart. I don't know from their music what they believe in or what they are trying to say. Their solo careers bear that out -I would rather see the Smurfs than Paul MacCartney and I think Lennon was a complete arsehole.

I don't like Paul MacCartney but I like the Beakles.

I'd rather listen to The Doors or lots of other things but they've written some songs. Agreed that their hype is off putting, like you have no choice, the Beakles simply are the best or incredible, just as the sun rises on a morning.

Reminds me, the radio commentator, when describing a Liverpool corner said, 'And Gerrard places the ball immaculately in the quadrant.'

What the fuck, like some players do it in a really foul and unclean manner, tosser.

I hate they way they fawn over the 'big four' and England players.

Ooh yes Mick the Doors were ace!

I think they started as an anti Beatles kind of movement along with a lot of other West coast surf type bands.

Now see if it had been me, I'd have said "And Gerrard the diving piece of shit places the ball immaculately in the quadrant"
