Last time i was there was the thrashing we got for Peter Reids last game. One of the lowest points in our illustrious history. Think i met you down there didn't it ?, it was awful, pure misery. The game that is   .

Some good boozers in the town but a taxi to the ground is the best bet.
Intriguing game, wonder if Snods will play a different role? Anyway, full report expected and we don't want to wait till Monday for it either so chop chop lad   .

Trying to extract something positive from one of the worst games of football I have seen in nay on 50 years borders on the impossible. What I can say is that if the anti-football Leeds United are going to play gets too difficult there is always the Colin, Mick and big Ronnie sideshow to entertain you.

Now to be  fair Portsmouth didn’t exactly want to put on a footballing exhibition but they did at least have a game-plan. Basically to launch it long, attack the end bathed in sunshine second half after watering that penalty area. Not the most detailed of game-plans but what you could expect from a club heading for extinction and with a squad of 17 players. We in contrast had no such game-plan with all our endeavour coming from dead-ball situations. Even under the early stage of the Graham era and the hoof-fest that was Wise were wern’t that bad!

Some of you will have noticed Snodgrass was named captain, this was a lie, he may have shook hands before kick-off but that was a political decision (think about that for a minute, our new manager decides the captains arm band should be handed out on the basis of keeping the support happy and not on who directs the players, utter nonsense). Brown was the real captain, pointing, encouraging, berating and at one stage in the first half running 60 yards across the pitch to receive instructions. Snodgrass did none of these things, except his usual minor moans when things are not going his way and they definitely were not at Fratton Park. He wasn’t so much playing in the hole more a walkabout role that seemed to stymie his play rather than encourage it.

The other Warnock picks and tactics raised some eyebrows, Bruce at right-back, replaced early in the match by Bromby (who proceeded to become long throw merchant). White on the right-side of midfield so that McCormack can play on the left, Pugh at left-back. The 4-5-1 left an isolated Becchio as the work-horse but at least he knew he had Forssell and Paynter on the bench! To accommodate the latter there was no substitute goalkeeper, which whilst this is a Warnock standard it is still a ridiculous risk to take, especially if you make no tactical substitutions all game!

Poor Becchio was expected to fetch balls from the higher atmosphere and then feed which ever players was within 30 yards of him, which was usually no-one! McCormack looked frustrated on the side-line. The outstanding Leeds United player was Brown (again think about that in the context of what we have seen in the last 6 months), the outstanding Pompey player was Mullins, who has never been a footballer, this tells you everything you needed to know about the game. Chances were at a premium and what was created tended to be of the bits and pieces variety, dire doesn’t do the quality of anti-football justice.

It might seem strange to criticise the defence after an away clean sheet but at no point did you feel secure. Lonergan pulled off a couple of those saves he does but he also struggled with the ariel bombardment. Lees had one of his worst games of the season, O’Dea did what we expected, some good defending undermined by his tendency to get turned a lot. Bromby is never a relaxed right-back but adds to the height Warnock clearly wants.

So whilst the football was hardly riveting, the sideshow was a little bonus. Warnock was never sat down, his assistants were equally always on their feet, I’m working on the assumption the younger fatter one was Jepson. The neanderthals in the kop are going to adore all that hysterical nonsense, Warnock even did one of his trade-mark imitation stamps that always get him into trouble (and his reaction to a throw-in decision near the half-way line was so OTT it must have embarrassed him). Given how we didn’t change our approach once in the game it seemed a lot of activity for little gain.

At full-time you wondered how you had keep your eyes open and how, despite a blatant handball in our penalty area first half and a disallowed goal which the referee judged to have gone directly in second half, we came away with a point. It would be nice to assume things can only get better style wise but that would be a strange perception based on that anti-football contribution. Warnock will no-doubt be tweaking the team even more over the next few games, I suspect he will be extracting out any quality and replacing them with work-horses devoid of quality (come on down Paynter And Connolly).

I am of the clear opinion a manager has to earn applause and his name being sang from the terraces, and to be fair the only attempts at a “CW barmy army” were rejected quickly. However what persuaded some of the support to chant “one Neil Warnock” after that abomination of a football games only they and their care workers can answer. This season is over for me, it is next that worries me!

Wow that sounds very mediocre indeed    Thanks for that. Lots of issues. Snods in the hole. Ross out wide does not seem right at all. Neither does Bromby, anywhere.

Cant help at east try to understand the manager though. Snods is our best, most creative player so maybe Warnock thought he could operate in a position where that could be fully exploited. He clearly knew what Pompeys game plan was going to be and sent his team out to counter that. Not an unreasonable stance given we were away from home at a place we usually get sod all from these days. Dunno, a clean sheat and a point and he will think he has done a good job. I've met Ronnie Jepson socially from his Udders days, a gent. Thanks Lilly, good read

Good report, thanks, seems to correspond with the overal impression taken from Bates Radio.  I don't listen to the blather before, inbetween or after games but I heard a rumour Eddie Gray was quite scathing with Leeds fans.  Anyone hear it?

Re the sub keeper situation, it was mentioned that Bromby would be the emergency replacement if Lonergan got injured.

Thanks for the report KmoL. Sounds like another 90 minutes of unremitting tedium.

Warnock usually rations himself to one creative player per team, so I reckon either Clayton or Snods will find themselves on the bench very soon.

Desperately need a leader on the pitch. If Brown was a half decent player, then he'd be the right man for the job. Why did we get rid of Doyle?

Recall for Paynter also on the cards

Thanks. Sounds like more of the same with a couple of changes of staff.

Re This: Another reason (in conjunction with those Bates Out campaigns with staying power), Bates and his useful idiots.

Any reason it wasn't open for comments?

Cheers

Yes me being me, I sometimes and particularily on a Saturday can't be arsed with comments and have been very clear from day 1 about that. Articles, regardless of perspective (except any pro-bates stuff) I'll publish, comments I leave to forums...of which, as you know, there are many variants.
