Will you be sitting stylishly outside cafes at dusk in chinos and your scarf set in an arrangement of knots whispering sweet nothings to that poor woman who is with you now, or will you be shouting at waiters at a volume suggesting deafness in the aforementioned restaurant staff: "I'm from Ponte me, pull me finger! Go on, pull it yer stupid wop!" I've got aŁ 20 that says the latter.

That's not such a stupid question.

At the WC in Japan I amused myself running around saying "Nipples!"

A lot.

And it probably only amused me.

Be foolish not to, although your heart strings will be tugged by the stray dogs there.

I was shocked to see Naples has its own shanty town near the harbour,  this was a few years ago before any migrant crisis. Hard to believe a modern European country could have such a thing.

I don't knowthe scale of them, but I seem to remember reading that there are shanty type set ups on waste ground in London and Paris. In fact there is, or at least recently was, a tent city in Park Square in Leeds.

Yeah saw that, load of posh kids pretending to be down n outs protesting about homelessness which I applaud but this was real poverty, houses made out of trash.
When my dad visited Naples he passed a run down block of flats and a basket on a rope dropped down from a couple of floors above from a woman begging.

A quick google of London/Paris/ shanty towns shows they exist there too. I do take your point that it shouldn't be happening in this day and age.

A problem is that a significant proportion of the population seem to be very unsympathetic with those in genuine need, particularly if they are immigrants.

Rocketing rents and house prices have made it difficult for those even on a good wage to afford decent accomodation.

Imagine what is like for those living from hand to mouth.

Ahhh. You see I've been to Naples in Florida. Lovely place, brilliant sunset and loads of dolphins.

Never been to the other Naples though. Enjoy

Well...

We had a good holiday, not great, but I never expected Naples to be as we found it.

Must begin by saying I had the best airport and flight experience ever thanks to Monarch. Never have I got through an airport quicker, and the extra leg room was well worth the money.

Then...

Taxi from airport to hotel, my God, where were we? For  a good ten minutes I thought we were in a third world country and I kid you not, then into the city and it became marginally better, but the traffic, well, bumper to bumper, side to side, suicidal scooter riders, thousands of em. Scary, scary scary. Driver spent more time on the horn than clutch, brake and gas combined, but got us there. Hotel down a dingy city centre street just off the via De Pretis the facade of which was single shop wide, flanked by scooter garages on either side with bikes being repaired on the kerb. Tiniest reception ever, desk on the left flight of stairs on the right.

The room wasn't ready so we left our bags and went exploring.

I'm setting the scene thus far as Naples is concerned, and for a short while it will not get any prettier.

Up to the main street from t' o' tel, dirty, litter strewn and graffiti on every building. Pretty typical really as it turned out, other than the shopping areas and even they didn't escape the graffiti. Imagine if you can your local city or town centre with spray painted graffiti on EVERY building, you can't can you? Well welcome to Naples.

Down to the sea front and 'The Bay of Naples'.

Now I do understand that the south of Italy is not the wealthiest part of the country, and would expect some 'industry' but the bay has fuck all going for it. Shabby marina, no restaurants, bars or shops to mention. My face must have said it all, H said 'not what you expected is it' (she has been before) 'shit hole' I replied'. The good thing is me n' H could find some enjoyment wherever so despite the poor start I was not down hearted. The reason we chose Naples was it's proximity to Pompei, a place I have always wanted to see since being a kid, and no I was not around for the eruption, more to follow on Pompei.

By chance we happened upon what would be the shopping bit of the city with some nice cafe's and upmarket shops, still litter strewn and graffiti covered but not down at heel as had been witnessed during the previous hour, plus plenty of pizzerias, Naples has the reputation of producing the finest pizza's in Italy and I was keen to sample them.

Stopped and had a cold drink on a little square with buskers and street vendors doing their thing, things were looking up. Making our way back to the hotel we were expecting the worse but despite our initial misgivings the staff were very friendly, smiling and the room was very clean, spacious and modern.

That evening we made our way back towards the cafe's and pizzerias of Via Toledo, spoilt for choice so we had a stroll with the locals taking in the warm evening air and a couple of beers. Settled on Pizzeria Ciro, looked like plenty of the locals were dining there so when in Rome (or south of). Naples and it's reputation for pizza are well founded, the dough is a taste sensation in itself, plus as we were informed topped with locally sourced ingredients, loved it. Delicious ice cream for us both to follow. Lass who waited on us was a piece of work (in a nice way), suggesting I stay off the strong beer (my reputation had not preceded me) but I risked it anyway.

A steady stroll back to the hotel for an early night.

Tomorrow POMPEI!!!

Good reportage pal. Sorry it didn't pass muster, but it begs the question of: If the current Mrs Sheeps had been before why did she book again? It would take more than pizza dough to get me back to somewhere as shoddy sounding as you describe.

Spot on about the company your with when travelling. Together you can make anywhere fun, always something to laugh at. At least you didn't get vany earthquakes.
