So far

Right I’m furious, Leeds City Council museums and galleries are refusing to stock the book, even though they describe it as ‘very exciting’ and would like to stock it. They want around £3.50 for each book they sell, a much larger amount than Leeds tourist information, Waterstone’s, HMV and amazon, deduct my costs and it becomes pointless for me. So these commercial organisations, some with prime Leeds rents, see its value and are considerate of my smaller economy of scale but Leeds City Council are not. They wouldn’t even listen to my point of view but simply repeat ‘phone back when you can meet our discount levels’ over the top of what I was trying to say - in the way that people who know you've got a good point so they don't want to hear it do. Part of why I’m ranting now, to get it out.

Why I can’t compete on discount.
My economies of scale are different. Because these other companies churn out the same book for different cities they know roughly how many they will sell and how much profit they will make. They will therefore print up 5000 to 10,000, for example, at a huge discount per book – to do that I’d need to sell the house. Because they’ll do ‘Visions of Leeds’, ‘Visions of Barnsley’, ‘Visions of Bristol’ etc., they’ll get additional discount as their economies of scale increase further and they can chisel their printers even more, for 50,000 copies. I am competing with big business as a self-published author, a punk (DIY) publisher if you will and I can’t /won’t. This is a one off book for me. I’ve worked hard on this book and I need to make money off it but not the £50 - £60 k a year that middle management at the council get paid more like the wage of the office staff.

Business sense for Leeds Council Tax payers?
Their argument is that, with limited space, if they hold my book it takes the space of another book (usually factory book) that they get 10- 15% more discount on it, therefore it doesn’t make sense for them. Last week my book was the eighth bestselling book in Waterstone’s Leeds, not out of ‘Leeds’ book but out of everything, Alan Sugar, Michael McIntyre etc. It looks completely different to the local history books and would stand out next to those dry books and I think lead to impulsive sales. So they may get an extra pound per book for the other ones but they would sell many, many more copies of mine than the 1 or 2 a month of a dull book that has been sitting on their shelves for 8 years.

And what will they stock in its place?
Now there are some good Leeds (or specific area) books written by people who care (David Thornton, Noel Proudlock, Thoresby Society etc.) but there is also a lot of mass-produced tat from publishers that churn out the same poorly researched, dull series of books for Leeds, Brighton, Barnsley, Newcastle etc. These are written by jobbing, half interested writers who have no real knowledge, passion or interest in the city of Leeds, they simply get a pile of books on Leeds (or the specific topic) and re-hash all the stuff already written with their ‘in-house’ slant – knock off the Leeds book, wait for the pay cheque and to move on to ‘do’ Nottingham. You can tell in the dry, fake authoritative nature of the writing and lack of material that couldn’t be easily found.  The other thing is that because I’d read so much I became a bit of an expert (I don’t retain info for very long) so I’d read these factory books and think I can’t believe they’ve just gone into to all the detail of the dull stuff and left out the interesting and crucial stuff or presented that as fact when no-one knows for sure. Were I to buy one now I’d feel cheated.

I shouldn’t really get into what my book is BUT it’s certainly a bespoke, hand crafted Leeds book full of civic pride, plugging/celebrating many of the council sites and areas of interest, which is totally different in tone, feel, content and passion to anything they've got and they will not stock it as I can’t offer them a big business level of discount. I’ve also done the research that these other ‘factory’ books don’t do, I’ve emailed experts, read pages of dry academic material, sorted out areas of ambiguity to do with the city, phoned people who know about things because they experienced it. I’ve gone to Leeds City libraries and dug out obscure books and material, trawled internet forums like Leodis and Secret Leeds for more hours than I’d like to admit, as well as things like looking for every reference to Waddingtons board games I could find and counting them etc etc. And why? Because I care and I want to get it right. I wanted to dig up lost nuggets, find lost philosophers, uncover interesting facts and stories to do with Leeds. I didn’t ‘knock it off’ in a few months and move on to do Birmingham.

Civic Pride.
Ok so this is pretty much a personal rant but it’s not just that, Leeds City Council represent me and my city. I got a message from someone I don’t know who had bought it for a Brazilian mate as a leaving present. Ten minutes into the train journey the woman got a phone call from the Brazilian lass saying how funny (funniest book she’s ever read were her actual words, maybe not much of a reader), interesting and exciting it was.  She left Leeds, buzzing about, full of enthusiasm for Leeds, now she may never return but someone from Runcorn probably would. I guarantee that non-Leeds people are more likely to visit Leeds after reading my book and certainly more likely to visit, or return, than if they’d read the dry local history books that Leeds City Galleries and Museums stock. They’ll feel warmer toward the city. I’m bigging up and selling Leeds, the factory books are not. I hope that part of the Brazilian womans passionate response to the book is to do with Leeds voice within the book, it is a Leeds book in a way that the dry books are not and I hope gives non-Leeds people a feel for the ‘real’ city. I am a Leeds lad speaking in a Leeds way about Leeds, the city I love, and I hope the book is enthused with the nature of the people of Leeds. I wanted to write about Leeds with passion, life, humour or sadness and feel sad that Leeds City Council only see it as a business opportunity and even then, make a stupid, pure business decision.

Mr McCann - I don't think your MP will be of much use, but have you thought of contacting your local councillors. They should be able to put your case more directly and forcibly.

If they say they can't - ask them if you need to ask your MP/ local media to clarify why they can't. And if they have votes to burn.

Perhaps Radio Leeds' recent returnee, breakfast show stalwart, Martin Kelner (remind him that his career was seemingly dead in the water until I bigged him by being quoted as putting him between Danny Baker and Danny Kelly in the listenability [another word for Mr Grind to assimilate in his ever-expanding Americana-ruined vocabulary]) stakes.

Or alert the local BBC/ ITV stations to this moral outrage.

In this day and age of Facebook and Twatter, is there no way we can organise our children to bunk off school and instead storm the Town Hall and burn out a few police vans?

No idea, I tried doing what PM suggested, phoning my councillor earlier but didn't get through. I've put it up the facebook group but I'll have to tell people it's there.

I can't get too side-tracked and need to concentrate on making sure that HMV know that it's up on their stystem and they can put it on the shelves now. I've done no press yet, so I need to nuture the Ee Po (coming round on Tuesday) YEP, Rad Leeds etc etc. Try and get more outlets. Touch up/double proof book before get more stock - I've got 11 copies left. Put it to my printer that the more discount they give me the more books I'll print. Make sure it's visible in Waterstone's. Try and get some near the Uni for when it goes in Leeds Student etc et etc.

Got to be a flogging machine not a one issue angry man.

Mr McCann - following our recent discussions, I sincerely hope you have put to one side a first edition of your mighty tome for me to purchase.

I'vew tweeted the picture to leedscc and facebooked it. I suggest that anyone with a twitter account asks about copies of the book, on twitter to @leedscc. we could just spend all day (if you have all day) bombarding their account with such requests.

Of course PM, I've put aside a fairly high number from the first 100 for you.

I'm hoping not to have to re-order yet as Waterstone's have recently ordered 80 copies and some of those are mine.

Have you thought about touting them to the posher hotels in the area?

They often have small gift shops selling local items.
