So the first thing I ought to report is that before the Kruezberg protest I was actually party to another protest. This one was in aid of something called Tacheles. This on the face of it is a squat. Its a place where various artists parade their wares. It has very small works of art like jewellery, to very large works of art like enormous great metal sculpture. Its is possible to buy clothes and all sorts there. So the point is, its a massive squat, its cool, its funky and its under threat of closure. There is a campaign running to save it. I happened to stumble into the over policed protest taking place in its honour.

As you can see there were two vans for the protest and a handful of people walking alongside, the police covered this with at least three vans and others on foot. The protesters seemed pleased to see me and handed me (and others) a card to post to show our support, we showed our support later in another way and I kept the card to share with you.

I followed for a while then made my way off. A couple of  days later and I saw yet another photo opportunity of some really cool Berlin art on a wall, when I moved in I realised that I had stumbled upon the place we had been meaning to visit.

The very next day we both went back to investigate further and it was our intention to make purchases. We wanted to buy some art and we wanted to support this place having seen it on the TV some time ago in Britain. This we did. We did a tour around the metal sculptures that are housed in the grounds to the left of the above picture. There are some stalls there that sell small paintings and clothing. We purchased a painting from one of the stalls, a sort of abstract in pink, gold and black. I would upload pictures but both pieces we bought are in the shop being framed. We made our way back by a man selling clothing that had gone through a screen printing process. They were funky, not expensive but they looked uncomfortable to be worn and had the added hardship that you'd never be able to wash them. We left that and entered the building. We found this girl scrawling away on an old LP, thats a vinyl record to you younger readers. I could have easily purchased everything in her 'store'. We saw a piece that we liked and started negotiations. It turns out that she was responsible for half of the wares in the 'store' and that the piece we wanted was by her. Between her little English and our little German we managed to get a deal and find out a bit about her. She's had no formal training, she has been at Tacheles for two years. She says she has learned a lot there. We purchased a small canvass that has abstract work around the words Money Pollution. She told us that one day she happened to just see the two words and it struck a chord with her. She had done work on canvas and bits of wood that she found in the street. She was fantastic, we loved her because she was clearly talented, she came alive when talking about her work but went shy went you offered any compliments on her work. Her name is Laura Polke This is her website (its in German, but have a click around and see lots of groovy stuff) http://www.bildunginaction.net/

I cheekily asked if I could take her picture which she said I could, the only proviso being that I sent it to her via email, which I have. This is it.

Leaving Laura to work and blush we moved on to the rest of the artists. For the main part the rest was a lot more......professional looking, i use the word loosely but it seemed they were more concerned with the  selling rather than Laura who seemed blissfully happy painting old cupboard doors. Talking of Doors, the stalls in the rest of the building played music, many of them playing The Doors, this made me smile in a sad way. I suppose its ok, but i would have preferred to hear something more German, more homemade, not something that attracts your European 19 year old cosmopolitan-hippie.

During our tour a chap explained that the grounds round the back were much larger and that there was much more work in them but that three weeks previous "Big machines come and smash up, they now build a wall (can you believe it??) to keep us out, so now we build a bridge". This was indeed the case, they were welding a bridge over the three metre high wall the authorities had placed there. Of all the cities in the world to know about walls, you'd have thought Berlin may have learned its lesson.

The building itself used to be a Jewish department store as it is in the Jewish area just down the road from the magnificent Synagogue. It was then used by the SS as a Nazi prison, various people had used it but it has slowly deteriorated and been partly destroyed.

He tried to sell me a pair of jeans,i liked them, but the difficulties of the uncomfort and not washing was putting me off. He wanted 25 euros for them, i was considering this, but he kept trying to tell us they would be worth hundreds in London, and we tired of that.

well due to back problems i had to buy a walking stick when i was there. it turns out that when i get out my little daily comfort zone i can't really do a lot, so i bought a stick and this instantly ages a person by about 30 years.

They must have given it a scrub down then, because it was Abraham Lincoln when I was there a couple of months ago, particularly around the stairwells. Not surprising really, the toilets are such a disgrace that pissing on the stairs is the coward's way out.

Sounds like you were there during the day. It hots up a night when the bar get busy. I mentioned this in my Berlin report in the "strange plaices" section. The bar is dark and dingy with deafening techno beats, clouds of hash smoke and some weird 'n' wonderful characters. A few drug dealers lurking around as well.

Tacheles is a prime example of the sort of counter culture that the Germans have mastered, alongside the likes of the Loveparade and St Pauli FC. Britain seems pretty bland by comparison at times.

Here's a few of my photos:
