The Housemartins, Philip Larkin, Spurn Head, the smell of fish and it's own independent telephone company.

Not much to show for 1000 years.

I know Everything But The Girl were formed at Hull University, but I'm not sure if either of them were originally from there and, quite frankly, I can't be arsed to Google to find out.

I'm pretty sure Fat Boy Slim doesn't live in Hull any more - he's a close neighbour of the lad Grunt.

It's not about what culture they have (or don't have) historically, it's the culture they are creating now and in the future.  I'm pleased for them, with luck it will boost a city which needs it... in the end it's all about money is this award.

Eddie sometimes accompanies Magda when she visits her cousin, Basia, in Hull. There's quite a sizeable Polish community there.

He says they do pretty good fish and chips - as long as you get them to skin the fish first!.

He usually takes the van so that he can stock up on cheap Polish beer. (He reckons the mattress in the back is to stop the tins getting damaged.) The Poles apparently brew some decent stuff, often on the strong side.

Hull no longer whiffs of fish. There's only a small remnant of the once mighty fishing industry left - a source of a significant part of Hull's problems.

Though if you do want to experience the old-time fishy odour for yourself, Eddie suggests Basia's bedsit when the hot water boiler's on the blink.

Seconded. Totally agree with Codge. It was Derry this year and they have done ok with it. Hull needs a lift as it has seen better times than its in now. The people who get sniffy about other cities in Yorkshire are usually Loiners who think the sun shines out of Leeds backside, when the reality is that Leeds aint all that anymore. At best its an ok place at worst, a dumping ground for unchecked immigration and a second rate football team with a large racist following. Great place. *

Well done Hull! rockingdude7ee.gif

*Just thought I'd get the reality check in before the blowers of smoke up Leeds' arse start posting.

To balance that a bit, 'ull rugby supporters are some of the worst in the land for trouble at matches.  Many Leeds United fans are not from Leeds

Hang on. I’m not after comparable case studies. As seen in the recent  match thread in the Leeds section about the nigger chants, you can’t escape the fact that  a lot of LU fans are racist, and those that don’t chant still stand next to those who do. So the decent ones are complicit by association. Soz Codge but no one can argue with that. I saw in that thread you said something like “I’m sure the racists weren’t season ticket holders”. But they are still fans of LU. As for Hull rugby league fans that might well be true but can we at least have some honesty from decent LU fans like yourself that some of the people who you share a stand with and support Leeds United are fucking awful human beings. In the chant “When the Whites go marching in” it mentions wanting to be “in that number”. Why would anybody decent want to be? A large majority of Leeds fans are a pig/human hybrid who are as thick as shit. The latter is a fact that can be danced around and avoided forever (and which is by many of the blinkered thousands who visit ER on a regular basis) but it’s the glaring truth. I'm glad I saw through all that manufactured mass loyalty to a football club when I did. That is all. Anyway enough of all that, how ya doing mate?

PS This isn't in the Leeds United section so untwist your knickers all those who say I spoil all things in that section.

PPS If further evidence were needed of my pig/human hybrid theory we could refer back to all that nasty anti-German shite that me and you heard when we were in the Kop for that pre-season friendly.

Whoa there fella, complicit is some accusation.  And this thread is about city of culture and I responded to your comment about Leeds fans being racist.  I pointed out that many Leeds fans are not from Leeds, implying that they are nothing to do with the city as such.

You've never heard me deny that there are a lot of cunts who follow Leeds, and there are a lot of cunts who follow other football teams.  Other sports teams in fact.

I'm okay, thanks for asking.  Got a lot of crap on my plate and I don't need an argument about racism at football adding to it tbh.

How are you?

And i gather that when you followed LUFC, Dock was back in the 80's? When we were known for having some of the most ignorant racist bunch of oiks going. Probably more racist chants/songs then than ever before.
Did you speak up about it? Probably not.

Exactly right badge. Week in week out I'd listen to that stuff and laughed but my whole point is that as I've grown older from being a daft kid I have seen through it for how pathetic and wrong it is. I hope I have progressed and matured as an individual to the point that I choose to do anything on a weekend as long as it isn't standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the wankers who go in the Kop. The nineties saw massive changes in attitude towards race and gender but in football stadia everything stood still. It's the only place in the country where dickheads can go and shout their heads off about what they like even if it's backward and vile. The stands of a football stadium are where men can remain children. Unchecked and devoid of any interest in or have to act with regard to how society as a whole has changed. Blind faith in a company/club who's owners and players care not a shit about those who stand in crap weather week in week out. Some need to feel part of something like LU. I don't. I have the wit, personality, and enough of an acute sense of the ridiculous and when I'm being conned out of money not to buy into the that blind faith. Yes I used to stand amongst those fans but not now. And never will again.

Dock, like most mates I love you like a brother.  Even the female ones.  But I don't know why you're slating us Leeds fans and I don't get how we can all be accused of blind faith and being conned out of our money.  All the match reports by various and brilliant reviewers on here, does thst smell of blind faith?  We pay to watch football matches, the quality obviously has varied from sublime to the more usual sub sub sub standard but it's still been a football match.  One of my best mates is a season ticket holder, along with a fair few of us I've been going to games with him for decades, he's black.  Your comments about us all being complicit in the racist abuse is unfair and inaccurate, and if you honestly think incdividuals can make a difference against pissed up, ranting, scummy racist chants/chanters who are very often prone to random violence too, then I think you're dreaming my friend.
