For the first time in forty years ive realised i can't keep calling in for a couple of pints every time I go out for a walk or into town. Mainly because of the frequency i can now do this but also because l've recently discovered the pleasure of just having a coffee. Found a few good places in and around Huddersfield where the atmosphere is akin to a pub where you can just sit and ponder with maybe a music mag. I'm not a fancy coffee drinker, straight up with hot milk is best. Anyway here's a few I've discovered.

Cafe Venicia in town. Big Windows, very Italian, subdued but quality jazz based music.

Blue Rooms in town. A tad hipsterish, funky location in the Byram Arcade but very relaxed.

Coffee Evolution again in town. Busy, eclectic, good music lovely coffee. Good window seats.

Beatties, Holmfirth.  Traditionally quaint, quality cakes and coffee but with the Holmfirth tax.

Ashby's, Slaithwaite, friendly very local

Hand made bakery, Slaithwaite. Best bread in Yorkshire therefore the world. Worth it for that alone.

Unfortunately coffee shops seem to attract the I-Gen brigade who cant seem to sit anywhere alone or in company without opening up various devices around them and perpetually checking their phones.

Any good places in Leeds?

Mrs. Athas - if you enjoy your coffee served by a beardy bloke with a man bun wearing a checked shirt this is for you. Has all the usual independent coffee shop stuff, random tables and chairs and exposed brick walls. Decent coffee

La Bottega Milanese in The Light - just great coffee

I've never really got this coffee thing to be honest. Always seems so over priced considering it's just a handful of beans.

My Tassimo and a Jacobs Latte Macchiato Less Sweet is right up me street.

Love em'. Been a patron for the last fifteen years or so or whenever they really kicked in over here. Good book reading comfort as well. Not keen on the Costa chain. Re HH's point about them being dear. The food is extortionate but the coffee isn't too bad. Just eat elsewhere. I'm a bit of a cheeky monkey and buy a cheaper choclate éclair from Gregg's and then eat it in the coffee shop. I'm dead rock n' roll me. There aren't many other places to go. At least most coffee shops are a fucksight cleaner than a lot of the old greasy spoons.

My one pet hate in all coffee shops, chain or independent, is background music. Just fucking switch it fucking off and lets have some nice peace and quiet. "Buts it ambience Dock", Its a fucking racket is what it is and it gets right on my fucking nerves!

Not really my thing to do on my own. Mrs C does get me to go for coffee and cake when we are out together quite often.  Had half hour to kill in town earlier and went into my local and sat at bar with a coffee chatting.

Blue Rooms in The Byram Arcade? God is that still going? Hats off for staying open that long. I used to go in there when I was a student at Huddersfield. Would pop in after a browse in Dead Wax Records upstairs. The lad who had the record shop was a bit Charles Shaar Murray in his manner if I remember rightly.

£2.30 ish for a decent sized quality coffee round here H. I think that's alright. Cheers for them two Foz. I walk past the Mrs Athos place a lot and its always busy with a good mix of people. Ill pop in next chance I get, on my way to the Duncan

Blue Rooms live n Kicking Dock. It's been through a few changes since its original Tree hugging Vegan ethos but is currently top drawer with terrific quality Cafe Food. Blimey I might have seen you in Dead Wax sometime and remember the CSM Geezer. Going before that there was Byram records run by Rockabilly Ken, a brilliant second hand record shop. I think between there and Jumbos I owe 80 percent of my record collection. Incidentally the Welly across the Road has gone tits up. Now some kind of Weird British/Caribbean themed cafe bar called the Jules Verne. I seem to remember you used to go in there
