I used to like listening to it when I was drifting off to sleep years ago, but I have recently rediscovered how good this station is. I just love how it flips from one subject on a show to a totally different thing, and it could be something I know naff all about (an endless list) but it still keeps me hooked. Maybe the most educational form of media I partake in at the moment.

Announcer: "And that was Professor Timothy Andrews of The Royal Hummingbird Appreciation society discussing his thesis on the nesting habits of the twatter-bladdered specfaced Hummingbird, after the news we will be speaking to Ivan Murderousbastardivic of the KGB regarding his most recent proposals for the widespread genocide of Muslims inChechnya"

Its all covered on Radio 4. It really is.

I have either r4 or BBC Kent on in the car. I like a decent bit of background noise. That, or very loud guitars and vocals.

They don't mind profanities either.

There were a couple of view expressed on "The Archers" this evening that I was surprised to hear. (To clarify - it was on - I heard it - end of story).

Two gentlemen flatmates had taken two young ladies for the evening to a night club. There appeared to be some confusion and a degree of mistrust as to who was supposed to be accompanying who.

I must confess that I was surprised to hear the lines, "You don't look at the mantelpiece when you're poking the fire" and "Don't keep me awake with the headboard banging" included in the script.

Hats of though to the continuity announcer immediately afterwards with his, "It's good to see that romance is alive and well in Ambridge..."

It is rather great isn't it, as Dock suggests, it's great how they skip between subjects of polar opposites.

Sadly I don't get to listen to it as much now, but try and catch it when I can.

I also like the fact that they believe the audience to be mature enough to accept adult language.

There seems to be some rumble about it i hear, they were perhaps planning to lighten the whole thing to attract new listeners.

No soundtrack interferes with the library/museum-like ambience.

Just the sound of two hearts beating as one.

More the disapproving "tut" of a disapproving librarian faced by a long overdue withdrawal.

You're too harsh on that girl.

Chorley FM, actually: "Coming in your ears".

That is how you get hearing aids.

As the condescending BBC television news just winds me the fuck up I thought I would give the Radio 4 newshounds a try. They leave their sugary television anchormen and women colleagues in the dust re: reportage. Some great coverage of the Japan earthquake and T'Libya.

To be honest, I'm finished with BBC television news. I can't find any reason why I should give my time up to watch the dross they broadcast everyday.

I'm sure Matt Baker must have something to do with the poor quality of journalism on BBC telly.

I agree largely with what you say about the range of stuff on there Dock. I mean if you fucking hate The Archers and the mere sound of the theme tune makes you feel like smashing the next person you see in the face (for example), there will be something else on soon like a documentary on the history of the Fair Isle sweater to redress the balance.

We have our alarm clock tuned to the Today prog and I find that in the current climate its serious news reportage is not the most cheery start to your day. So ideally I'd prefer something less newsy and a bit more cheery. But generally

I listen to a fair amount of stuff on Radio 4, but the Today programme makes me want to smash the presenter (in particular, the whiny Sarah Montague) in the face.

There's too much petty political point scoring in a "what a serious probing journalist am I" way. (If they want some serious probing doing, get Googlebot#4 in).

They'll have some slimy, odoius politician on (clearly, slimy and odious were tautologous in this instance) defending the indefensible, and the presenter will ask the same fucking question on a particular nit-picking point over and over again, but in a slightly different way (because that's what serious probing journalists are supposed to do).

And the end result - 10 minutes of tedium that could have been avoided. You know the politician is clearly in the wrong - but despite the serious probing questioning, still has not admitted it.

Jeremy Kyle wouldn't fucking put up with it. He'd punch the political fucker in the face and then set his bouncers on him if he retaliated.

The Today programme. Not for people who don't like serious probing.

Tonight, Chain Reaction - 6.30pm

Peter Hook Interviews John Cooper Clarke

Former Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook takes the helm, interviewing punk poet John Cooper Clarke, who rose to prominence in the 1970s and featured in shows alongside bands including the Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks. They discuss their shared Salford heritage and appearances in adverts during the 1980s.

Total Radio 4 nut now. First thing that goes on in the morning when I'm getting Joe's feed ready and then its on early evening when I'm faffing (I'm a faffing expert me) about in the kitchen when Mrs. D is watching T'Emmerdale or some other similar programme. I've also recently become partial to a bit of BBC World Service.

Give it a go. Go on! Much better than those gonks on the BBC telly news.

*tunes in n' that*
